Which one fits you.

Pick Mixpanel if

You have a person who owns the event model and you need retention, cohorts and experiments in one place.

  • Someone on the team names events and keeps them clean
  • Your main questions are about retention and feature usage in the product
  • You want a free plan, a warehouse sync or built-in A/B tests

Pick GrainQL if

You run growth without a data person and you need to know where the site loses signups or sales.

  • You are the founder or marketer and also the analytics team
  • Your main questions are about signups, checkouts and paid traffic
  • You want to be told about a drop, not to build the report that shows it

What actually differs.

Three situations where the choice shows.

Who sets up the tracking.

You want to know how many visitors click the pricing button. Nobody tagged it, and the developer is busy until next sprint.

Mixpanel

Mixpanel Autocapture records clicks once it is on in the SDK snippet. You then filter the generic click event down to that button in the query builder and save it as a custom event.

GrainQL

GrainQL has a visual picker. You open your live site, point at the button and click. It is tracked from then on, with no code and no deploy.

Who notices the drop.

Checkout conversion fell on Thursday. You were in meetings and did not open a dashboard until Monday.

Mixpanel

Mixpanel can alert you, per saved report. Threshold alerts start on Growth and anomaly detection is on Enterprise. You can launch a root cause analysis from the alert.

GrainQL

Neo watches the whole site on every plan. The daily digest flags the drop without being asked. Ask Neo why and it names the cause, with the sessions attached.

What the tool is built around.

It is Monday and you have twenty minutes for analytics. You need one answer about last week, not a new board.

Mixpanel

Mixpanel is built around reports: Insights, Funnels, Retention and Flows. Mixpanel Agent can build them from a prompt, and the depth is real when you have time to use it.

GrainQL

GrainQL is built around the question. Ask Neo why signups fell and you get a first answer in about 3 seconds, with the recordings attached as evidence.

Row by row.

Checked against Mixpanel's own site in October 2026.

What it costs.

Mixpanel is free at small volume and GrainQL is not. GrainQL costs the same however many events each visitor sends.

Mixpanel

Mixpanel bills by events. The Free plan covers up to 1M events a month and 10K session replays. Growth starts at $0 and charges per event after the first 1M.

When Mixpanel is the better pick.

Fair is fair.

Depth of product analytics.

Retention, cohorts, flows, attribution models and funnels with built-in significance. If you ask how users behave inside your product over months, Mixpanel goes further.

A real free plan.

Up to 1M events a month and 10K session replays at no cost. GrainQL has a 14-day trial and no free plan. At low volume Mixpanel is cheaper.

Warehouse sync and experiments.

Mixpanel syncs with Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, Redshift and Postgres, and has A/B tests and feature flags built in. GrainQL has none of these.

Try both for two weeks.

You do not have to pick on day one. The GrainQL tag runs next to the Mixpanel SDK, so both tools see the same two weeks of traffic.

  1. 1

Add one tag next to Mixpanel.

Paste the GrainQL script in the head or add it in GTM. It takes about two minutes. Leave your Mixpanel SDK, events and boards exactly as they are.

  2. 2

    Ask both the same question.

Pick one real drop from the last two weeks. Ask Mixpanel Agent and ask Neo. Compare how long each answer took and whether you would act on it.

  3. 3

Decide by who did the work.

If your team already lives in Mixpanel reports, keep it. If the GrainQL digest told you things nobody had built a report for, that is your answer.

Questions.

Not by default. Mixpanel pricing is event-based today, with a Free plan of up to 1M events a month. An MTU-based plan still exists for Enterprise contracts. GrainQL bills by monthly unique visitors with unlimited events per visitor.
